This is my dream, my passion to recreate the more beautiful parts of Tolkien's world into my own...To merge what I see with what I do not see, to have a blending of his world with mine...To be able finally to walk in the land I have so longed dreamed of...Come walk with me as we make this journey together...

Mirkwood/Greenwood Garden

Lets talk about Mirkwood/Greenwood, the haven of Legolas' clan. To the best of my understanding, correct me if I'm wrong! It was/is an evergreen wood. To me that means just that, evergreens. So I marked off a decent sized area, kind of an out of the way place that also needed a windblock from the north in wintertime. I proceeded to draw on graph paper the exact square footage the lot size. I then selected my evergreens, leland cypress, white pine, juniper, blue spruce, austrian pine.... I measured each off allowing for growing space for each, about 15' each direction for the pines so that they would gently touch but not overlap each other. The majority of trees planted here were the white pine. There are nine lelands planted all along the north border in a line. Two wild lobloly pines and there was a juniper on the east border. The juniper died, the two pines are thriving. The austrian pine is on the west mid border and is alone of its kind. There is one struggling blue spruce on the south/west corner. The rest are all white pine which I love, they whisper in even the slightest breeze. In the dead center I am still trying to erect a simple garden structure out of 4x4 post. I will have a simple open style roof with maybe a couple of planks going across just so I can plant some kind of flowering vine. I also want to be able to see the moon from there at night.... On the west border about half way I have placed white stepping stones creating a path coming in towards the east leading up to this structure. White reflects light at night so they can be seen...So perhaps a moonflower vine is the choice for the structure also due to its reflective qualities.

That sumurizes my version of Greenwood/Mirkwood, hope you enjoyed it. If I move I will strive once more hopefully in better soil to try again with better sucess.
